Special Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI) are areas and sites that are protected in the United Kingdom in order to conserve and facilitate the continuation of habitats containing significant flora, fauna and/or geology.
Although SSSI s are numerous and undergoing continued additions, obtaining the information to find these SSSI s is problematic and long winded. Indeed, the list is currently limited to England and Scotland, as the information from the Countryside Council of Wales is not easily extractable at present.
All locations are generally central to the SSSI which may be of considerable size. The location was determined from manual conversion of OS Grid Reference information into Lat/Long coordinates usable for distance and Google Map calculations.
It is surprising to find how many SSSI s are close to your home! Please note, some SSSI s are *NOT* publicly accessible and permission from land owners must be sought etc.
